Flowering #20, 2016
India ink and surface alteration on paper. 24″ x 36″
Who knows why making funny flower pictures has become my fixation? It’s odd, but I’m sticking with it, at least until the end of the year. You may have seen some of the quick snapshots I’ve posted of smaller two-sheet pictures that have been tumbling out during the last month (scroll down to previous posts if you want to check them out). This is a much BIGGER picture (each sheet is 24″ x 18″). I actually did it this past spring, but I think I’m ready now to try for more monsters!
Here are two close-up views. The first is of the right-hand sheet, and the other is a detail view from the left side. This is a very physical painting, with a whole lot of scraping, sanding, grinding. pecking and scarring of the surface. It makes for an astonishingly rich picture – which no photo or scan can really capture!
