Owls - Fearless Marks

HEY YA - IF YOU WANT TO READ ABOUT THE GREATEST DRAWING LESSON IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, continue on. If you want to JUST LOOK AT PICTURES, scroll down!

Okay, the greatest drawing lesson in the history or history was taught to me by a tiny kindergartener, as dainty as an elf. She had the BIG box of crayons, which I was surprised she could lift. Silly me, she totally ruled the world. Emily never selected crayons. Nope, she dumped them out, mixed them up and used them all.

One morning, she was ferociously going at it – BIG gestures, total focus. When I finally dared approach, I saw a large maroon oval with marks of every color shooting out.

“Hey ya,” your buddy, Mr. Literal said. “Is that a porcupine? Is it a spider?”

“No. It’s our new dining room table!” was her emphatic reply.

(Huh?)

“Yeah, see here’s the table, and these four purple lines going out are it’s legs, and all of these blue ones are chair legs if I’m under the table, and then these are my mom's legs and my dad’s legs, and these are for the dog. . .”

Holy moly. She was FAR beyond my reach. It was a masterpiece, so of course I asked if I could have it.

“No.”

“Could I maybe have it for a week?”

"No."

"Please? Pleeeeeeeeze?"

“. . . . . .Okaaaaay, but you HAFTA give it back.”

Done deal. Now I had a little time to catch up, and I wanted to try something. The next time I saw her I asked, “Remember this?”

“Yeah.”

“What is it?”

“It’s our NEW CAR!!! See, this is the front and here’s the back window and these lines are where the doors open, and these are my dog getting in, and these. . .”

KABLOOEY! My brain just blew up, and it never went back together quite right. Thank goodness. I think of that little girl now and then, with gratitude. She’s an adult somewhere. I hope she still rules her world. Silly me, of course she does. For my part, I try especially hard to make pictures with marks that count. I remember that big box of crayons.

I wish I could have kept her drawing.
